World Ocean's Day: How Discovery Coron keeps life below water clean with EcoConserve
What is World Ocean’s Day?
The ocean is home to most of Earth’s biodiversity and over the years, our oceans have been suffering from pollution, illegal fishing, and other threats. Thus, every June 8, we celebrate World Ocean’s Day, a global movement by the United Nations to remind us of the role that oceans have.
Discovery Coron’s sustainability efforts
Apart from taking care of our guests, Discovery Coron makes sure that the environment and wildlife is taken care of. Here are some of the ways we contribute to the preservation of our marine ecosystem:
1. Weekly underwater cleanup
Every week, Discovery Coron's Sea Guardians team joins forces with volunteer guests to conduct both beach and underwater cleanups. These efforts play a vital role in maintaining the health of our marine ecosystems by removing debris that can harm coral, fish, and other sea life.
2. Coral planting
Coral planting is another part of our ongoing commitment to marine conservation. This focuses on restoring damaged reef areas by attaching healthy coral fragments to degraded ones which will help revive and preserve vibrant marine ecosystems.
3. Recovery shelter for critically endangered fish species
Our waters serve as a refuge for some of the ocean’s most at-risk residents. By offering a protected area where critically endangered fish species can recover and regenerate, we contribute to the global effort of marine biodiversity preservation.
4. Turtle nesting site for Hawksbill and Green Sea turtle
Between November and January, our shores become a nesting ground for Hawksbill and Green Sea Turtles. Each year, we proudly assist in releasing approximately 200 hatchlings into the ocean.
5. Removal of crown thorns
Crown-of-thorns starfish are natural predators of coral and can cause significant reef destruction if their population grows unchecked. By actively removing them from our reefs, we help protect coral health and maintain the delicate balance of our underwater ecosystem.
